Mathematics Of Life
A new partnership of biologists and mathematicians is picking apart the hidden complexity of animals and plants to throw fresh light on the behaviour of entire organisms, how they interact and how changes in biological diversity affect the planet's ecological balance. Mathematics offers new and sometimes startling perspectives on evolution and how patterns of inheritance and population work out over time-scales ranging from millions to hundreds of years - as well as what's going on to change us right now. Ian Stewart, in characteristically clear and entertaining fashion, explores these and a whole range of pertinent issues, including how far genes control behaviour and the nature of life itself. He shows how far mathematicians and biologists are succeeding in tackling some of the most difficult scientific problems the human race has ever confronted and where their research is currently taking us.

Integrating Climate Energy and Air Pollution Policies
The idea of the interconnectedness of nature is at the heart of environmental science. By contrast, American policy making and governance are characterized by fragmentation. Separation of powers, divergent ideologies, and geographical separation all work against a unified environmental policy. Nowhere does this mismatch between problem and solution pose a greater challenge than in climate change policy, which has implications for energy use, air quality, and such related areas as agriculture and land use. This book stresses the importance of environmental policy integration at all levels of government. It shows that effectively integrated climate, energy, and air pollution policy would ensure that tradeoffs are clear, that policies are designed to maximize and coordinate beneficial effects, and that implementation takes into account the wide range of related issues. The authors focus on four major climate-change policy issues: burning coal to generate electricity, increasing the efficiency and use of alternative energy, reducing emissions from transportation, and understanding agriculture's role in both generating and sequestering greenhouse gases. Going beyond specific policy concerns, the book provides a framework, based on the idea of policy integration, for assessing future climate-change policy choices.

Professor Stewart s Hoard of Mathematical Treasures
Ian Stewart, author of the bestselling Professor Stewart's Cabinet of Mathematical Curiosities, presents a new and magical mix of games, puzzles, paradoxes, brainteasers, and riddles. He mingles these with forays into ancient and modern mathematical thought, appallingly hilarious mathematical jokes, and enquiries into the great mathematical challenges of the present and past. Amongst a host of arcane and astonishing facts about every kind of number from irrational or imaginary to complex or cuneiform, we find out: how to organise chaos; how matter balances anti-matter; how to turn a sphere inside out (without creasing it...); why you can't comb a hairy ball; how to calculate pi by observing the stars. And we get some tantalising glimpses of the maths of life and the universe.Mind-stretching, enlightening and endlessly amusing, Professor Stewart's new entertainment will stimulate, delight, and enthral.
The Book of Dzyan
This text reproduces nearly all of the "Book of Dzyan" that Blavatsky transcribed. It also includes long excerpts from her "Secret Doctrine" as well as from the Society of Psychical Research's 1885 report concerning phenomena witnessed by members of the Theosophical Society.
Research Handbook on Climate Change Adaptation Law
ÔThe present book is a much needed publication on climate change adaptation law. It is a collaborative effort of distinguished experts from around the world and adopts a holistic approach to adaptation, taking a global view, with a focus on the international, the regional and domestic levels. This publication has a wealth of information, illustrating the issue of adaptation with many examples from all over the world. One of the most valuable aspects of this book, ensuring that it will have a lasting value, is that it discusses all fields of law, which are vulnerable to climate change (such as tort law; insurance law; disaster law; marine law; water law; planning law; construction law; environmental law; forestry; energy law; biodiversity). The book also includes general issues of adaptation, such as climate justice and the relationship between adaptation and development; human rights in the context of migration law and compensation. It is written in a very accessible language and will be an indispensible reading for both scholars and practitioners. The content and structure of the book make it a definitive book on climate adaptation.Õ Ð Malgosia Fitzmaurice, Queen Mary, University of London, UK ÔThis book indeed will become the definitive text on climate adaptation law for the coming years! From a global law perspective, Verschuuren and his team analyse in an outstanding way the legal challenges and barriers to climate change adaptation and how they can be overcome. Just like climate change, this book is here to stay!Õ Ð Kurt Deketelaere, KU Leuven/League of European Research Universities (LERU), Belgium This timely Research Handbook discusses the challenges brought about by the need to adapt to a changing climate. It considers how adaptation is necessary to address impacts resulting from the warming of the EarthÕs atmosphere which is already unavoidable due to past emissions. With adaptation policies around the world still in their infancy, the book examines the legal challenges and barriers to climate change adaptation and how can they be overcome. It brings together expert contributors to consider topics ranging across tort and insurance law, disaster law, water law, marine law, planning law, biodiversity law, green buildings, pollution control, displacement, agriculture and energy. With its transnational and multilevel approach, the Research Handbook on Climate Change Adaptation Law will be an essential resource for academics in the field of climate change policy and law, policymakers and other government officials working on climate change, and NGOs working in the field of climate change.
The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby
After his father's death, Nicholas Nickleby, his mother and sister are at the mercy of his cold and unfeeling Uncle Ralph. Keen to rid himself of his nephew, Ralph sends Nicholas to work for a wicked master in a Yorkshire boarding school.
